GPS Mounting examples?
I was thinking about some type of enclosure for my cell phone (HTC Mogul - windows mobile) to be able to mount it on the handlebars, have it waterproof, shoc/vibration proof, etc..
My cell phone runs Google maps, TomTom, TrackyPro, and a couple other off-road tracking applications.. I just thought it'd be nice to have GPS, speed/alt readings, and the clock all on my "dashboard"...
My buddy works for a defense company, and does composites work on various aircraft. He also has the same cell phone as me, and he's always looking for interesting projects while working - so, I gave him this one..
Here is what he has so far:

The top right is the tray. It's all aircraft grade carbon fiber. It's VERY light, and VERY strong. It has a foam lining in it to hold the phone in a landscape orientation, and it holds it tight..
On the bottom is clear fiberglass window which is bonded to the "cap" you see top left.. The phone goes in the tray, and the cap with window goes over that.
He's currently fitting two quarter turn aircraft fasteners on top for easy (but tight/waterproof) sealing.. This thing is going to be able to take much more abuse than I could even handle
The last hurdle will be coming up with a bracket to mount it to the handlebars - that's what I'm looking for ideas on! Anyone have a GPS system with a handlebar mount of some sort? Fabricated, or store bought?
I'd love to see any systems people came up with!!!
I'll be posting pics of the finished product soon!!!!

That is awesome i was wanting to do something like that as well because I am going to be getting the new Iphone and thought it would be neat to find a way to mount it. let me know how it works and if you make any extras
I've got a Garmin 60CSx that I use, just have it stuck to the handlebars with a RAM mount. http://www.expressmounts.com/ has tons of mounting parts in stock, good service from them.
Those mounts look cool - but what about impact? Like if you dump the bike - there's no protection on the GPS!
Hmm.. Though the mounting brackets look nice - that gives me an idea for this CF enclosure!
thanks guys

Well, it's all done!

Mounted, TomTom running:

And a good program - tracky pro..

Hope it's nice tomorrow so I can ride it to work!
ROCK ON!!
Exactly what I wanted. It's not perfect CF work, but I don't care. It was free, and I'll take function over form any day
Only thing he was missing was wingnuts for the quarter turn fasteners, will have to deal with the philips heads for now - no biggy.
The best thing is I now have GPS on my bike, without worrying about damaging it if I fall..
Wooot!
PS = Anyone know if the charging system on an 07 KLX could handle charging the phone at the same time?!
