i know there are no fitting problems for the 15t but what about the 39t or the 40t you are using? Will it fit the KLS250S without any problems? Also, what is your speed at 7000rpm, 8000rpm and 10000rpm? I am quite interested to try the 15/40 set up you are having.

janov,
if you have the stock 42t, its just a chain issue. how stretched is your chain? Is there enough room for you to pull the wheel back to keep the chain in proper adjustment? other than that It should be no problem!

I figure fit it up with the 16 as short as the chain can go, then that should allow the 13 when wanted, with a chain adjustment. There is over a 10 mph difference at 5500 rpm between the 13/39 and the 16/39 and darn near as much with the 15/39.
Did the 16T work? If so what mods needed to be done? I am looking for a custom steel rear less than 39T and getting nowhere. I want 15x36. So far sprocket specialists told me they can get me a 37T in aluminum. I will have to think on fabricating a home made case guard for a 16T.

I ended up needing to gear for off road. I never fitted the 16, but have used the 15.

From my experience I think 15/39 nearly maxes out the 250 for the rpm thing. I didn't shift into 6th until around 60 mph and if I was at the lower part of the power a head wind would force a downshift. So that was about the lowest ratio I'd consider for a 250. Fact is I think a 14/39 would be great street gear for the 250.

A 351 could pull the lower ratio gear, but I really don't think it's worth going any lower. It is easier on an engine to let it spin in the mid range with less effort, in the "fat" of the power band, than to lug it down too much.

So I guess no one has actually used a 16T? I am using the HOV lane to go to work and that has me spinning my 351 at 7-8000 rpm which I believe is overshooting the torque peak. I would feel better cruising at 6500 rpm at 70-75 mph; the thinking is that this is where the peak torque is on a 351 with stock carb, cams, head, and header. Plus I would have a few more rpm overhead for passing where cruising at 7500 rpm has the 351 about tapped out for torque. If the 16T can't work, and no one will make a smaller rear sprocket, I am left with increasing the rear tire diameter which may noticeably change handling. Gearing Commander has 15x39 with a 130/80-17 at about 70mph which is close to what I am hoping to do. But how will she handle? That will raise the rear axle 13mm from the 130/70-17 tire. Should be no problem I would think for how I ride. Thoughts?
