Default FMF Alternatives & Header or Muffler First?

Hey guys, have a couple questions about exhaust.

Had a little cash come my way and would like to buy a header and/or muffler. Want to get these installed before installing the BB331 I bought from Richard Avatar.

I've been sold on the Q4/megabomb combo. But looking at overall price plus shipping to Taiwan and import taxes...it's a damn good chunk of change. I'm beginning to wonder if it's really worth it?

What alternatives are out there? Something cheaper (maybe I could find locally) but have similar weight reduction and quietness?

A klx300 exhaust looks great aside from weight reduction.

Or is FMF the be all end all?

Second question...if only buying one piece, the muffler or header pipe first?

Thanks

If you want really cheap theirs DanMoto exhausts.. I think they go for 80$CA but i've read online the weld tends to fail. Although I had one on my ZX9r for 3 years and it always served me good. Two bro's are good exhausts aswell but around the same price. I'd say just get the slip on and when more extra money comes send it my way - Joking, then get a header and jets.

Muffler by far. Coupled with jetting, it offers significant performance gains. The header value is actually somewhat debatable. I spent money elsewhere before spending it on an expensive header. I couldn't tell much of any performance gain by the header (except my wallet was lighter!).

If you want quiet, stock, FMF Q4 with quiet core or KLX300 system. I'm not aware of any other options.

Thanks guys. That's kind of what I was afraid of: Go cheaper and go louder.

They don't care about loud pipes here, or much of anything for that matter. Only care that you're wearing a helmet. But I'd rather go quiet if possible.

Think I got my answer. New muffler on the way.

There is also the system that Bill Blue offers. And Muzzy..?

Good point ^.

My memory is vague regarding any reports of Bill's system. The Muzzy is known for being loud, but when I was speaking with the manufacturer a couple years ago he said he had newer models that were significantly quieter. But I've never yet heard anyone say they were near as quiet as the FMF Q4 w/ QC.

I had an HMF. Even my riding buddies said it was loud.

I think if you were creative with constructing baffles, etc, you could lake a lot of bite out of a loud inexpensive pipe, but likely with some performance reduction. FMF has been doing dirt bike pipes for a long time.

Another consideration: From what I'm seeing with my dyno charts, using a larger-than-stock header and midpipe system can require a fueling curve practically opposite that of the stock header+slip-on..
