Honestly I don't think I'll ride more then 30 minutes or an hour very rarely above 65 but knowing I can go a solid 3 or 4 hours is nice.
You're generally correct on the trail vs. highway issue of creating heat. Slower, harder trail riding almost always creates higher temps than highway driving. The cooling system of the KLX is very good. Most of us seldom ever even have the fan come on.

Ha, yeah I know!

I plan on getting a windscreen and a better helmet for the street. Right now I rock a dirt bike helmet and goggles. It's not bad but I'd prefer less noise. I think I've been around to many fire arms and power tools with out ear protection. LoL

I looked in the manual today and it says I need to use 10W-40 that meets all these requirements like JASO MA, MA1 and MA2, along with all the API ratings. I think for the first few oil changes I'll run factory filters and dead dinosaurs for oil. Then I'll do synthetic or blend later on.
499??? Holy COW!!! I felt like I did my first oil change WAY later than I should have... at 60 miles. There was so much metal junk in the filter from the manufacturing process that I'm sure doing it sooner would have been a lot better than waiting as long as I did.

I use the CH6015 Fram filter and Penzoil motorcycle oil - at the viscosity recommended in the owner's manual (I forget exactly what is recommended). Oil is so cheap that there's no excuse to NOT change it frequently. At 600 miles, I was doing my second oil change.

I got mine used, so I changed everything. It had a 1000 miles on it. The only thing I noticed was that the coolant was filled with glitter.

what????

Gotta wonder about some stuff we hear at the dealers.

Rotella T 15-40. Oil changed about every 1,500 to 2,000 miles. Filter every other oil change.

Nobody piped up on this. It's total BS. No need for special MC oil. That's a marketing ploy.

I'm a rotella t6 guy. 5w-40.

I missed that part in his post about the claims of the dealer that the water pump on the KLX wasn't up to the task. What an uninformed, ignorant, lying bunch of BS. Why do guys like that even make stuff up like that? The KLX has one of the best cooling systems that I've encountered on a watercooled bike, and I've had a lot of watercooled bikes...and worked on lots of them at a motorcycle shop for 15 years. With such a challenging job market out there, you'd think dealerships could find some people who actually know something about the product.

I'm not sure what the dealer was smoking. Nice bunch of guys but it get the drift that they are laid back dudes working with their hobby. First thing that came to my mind was "how have I never heard of KLX cooling system issues" and if Kawi is offering a warranty, it would be to their benefit to make sure things are up to snuff as far as engine longevity.

I wonder how much of that material found in the oil is from the transmission/clutch?

As far as oils go, I'm of the belief to run what certifications they require. Ultimately it might not matter but why re engineer what they say? Oil is cheap insurance.

I noticed my cooling fan coming on less then a handful of times since I've owned it. Mainly sitting in traffic in 100+ degrees after I just got done riding some twisty roads. So far I love what my KLX has to offer. Can't wait to give it a good "final break in" this weekend!
