daveg and tmoe speak the truth. I also have the D-Flex guards, though the brand is not nearly as important as just having a set.

The "plastic wind deflectors" are just that. They provide zero protection to your bars and controls. Real handguards are 1/4 or more aluminum barstock and provide a surprising amount of protection for anything short of a really nasty spill. Tons of posts here on the subject and all have the same conclusion. As Phil Knight would say "just do it"
