Default Engine temp? How hot is normal?

Last time I rode my temp light came on (Trail tech vapor gauge) I was riding, first and second gear, in very tight woods and it was around 80 degrees, warmish. The temp the Vapor was showing was 204 degrees if I remember correctly. ...............What is too hot? I'm thinking of pulling the sensor and checking it in some boiling water to make sure it is accurate. I have noticed the temp light on sporadically since i installed the vapor. For reference, the Vapor sending unit is mounted in the hose immediately as coolant leaves cylinder.
Thanks Dan

Don't you have to set when the light comes on? That may be the default temp setting.

Yup, the warning light temps can be set at any temp you want.
I think I set it at 190, the default setting was lower.

That's getting warm, but, I wouldn't consider it hot until the coolant temp was closer to 212, or, the oil temp above...what...230 or so?

Was your fan running, cycling on and off, or just staying on?

I think the fan came on once, but not for very long.

Dan, I think that sounds fairly normal at about 204 for that kind of riding in those ambient temps. All 4 of my KLRs would get hot enough to push coolant into the overflow tank at a fast rate and even occasionally out the tank overflow pipe. I wouldn't consider that the KLX is even getting that hot until the overflow tank fills and/or pushes out coolant from the tank. Mine has seen about 210 on the Vapor gauge and did not even push coolant into the tank. I think that sending unit seems to be fairly accurate. I set my warning light at 200.

Dan,
I have a vapor, and the ThermoBob, with the Vapor sensor in the TB bypass line. So it is getting the hot coolant. The fan comes on when the Vapor goes past 207F, usually before 210. I've seen higher. Set my Vapor to yellow light at 205 and red light at 210. Been there many times. The coolant blew once or twice in Moab this year when it passed 210. Have not seen the stock temp light come on yet.

Thanks guys. It hit 210 today but it was some of the toughest riding I've done. Fan did come on a few times today. I think everything is OK, I was just starting to worry that I was ignoring a problem.
Thanks
Dan
