Default Really High RPMs - Engine Sounds Normal - 89 ZX600

Hi all - I was out yesterday and when I took off I noticed that my tach was really high and did not match the engine sound. The rpm's were nearly doubled of where they normally are for the speed and gear I'm in. The engine sounded like it normally does, but the rpm/tach was twice as high as it should have been. ie. idle @ 2K and now it was at 4-5K...To top it off, when I got near the red line, the engine baffled and I couldn't get anymore power out of the bike.I stopped and restarted twice, thinking it was some fluke - but no change...Any thoughts? Any would help.Thank you.Cory[/align]

Sounds like the clutch is slipping. Does the bike go faster as the engine revs higher?

The bike runs perfectly normal - its just that the tach is really high, so my powerband is very small before red line in all gears...
