Dads with Kids & Wife with Bikes.
I would have to say , Helmetwith Goggles, Neck brace, knee pads, boots, chest protector. I Knew someone that worked in an Emergence room as a nurse and she said they would get kids with head and neck injury's from ATV and dirt bike accidentsAs well as broken bones. My son has a Friend who was 12 or 13 at the time that sustained a neck injury from a dirt bike crash he did make a full recovery but now wears a neck brace when he rides! Buy as much protective equipment as you can afford. It will pay off in the long run....
I have to support the MX boot thing- you really don't need to begoing veryfast, most of the damage gets done at slow speeds when the "New" riders put their feet down[:@] when they shouldn't-sometimes they end up running themselves over; the quads are the worst for this..... but it still happens on a bike
.as a plus++ the sooner they get used to using the stiff MX boots while riding the better.
+1 on Helmetwith Goggles, Neck brace, knee pads, boots, chest protector. The most important thing about the gear is that they will develop skills faster. Knowing that they won't get hurt from basic crashes will give them the confidence to ride harder and maybe become great Supercross stars someday.
i totaly under stand the "who needs what when" this commin from the oldest brother of three with an older sister. Everyone of us loves to participate in sports and as you know... you need gear no matter what sport it is. so just make sure that they under stand this before you drop $$$ on a whole out fit. also when i was growing up it was a 2 to 1 kinda thing, I played soccer and when my bros were old enough it was their turn. I kinda had to quite because of the getting rides to pratice. easier to give a ride to two kids and pick them up at the same time then two here and one over here. But its all good, give a little take a little. the oldest is the first to get the gear and the first to give it up IMO. reason being there going to grow out of it soon and if there not totaly into it then at least the next kid has a chance as well.
i guess what i'm sayin is, buy the oldest one the full git up. helmet chest boots gloves whatever you can get your hands on. the next kid should get the helmet boots and gloves and the littlest one gets the helmet. sounds kinda crappy but its the fairest/econimical way my family could handle it... and belive me we dont come from money. oh also try craigslist.org for gear, i got a pair of fox boots for like 40 bucks and they rock. good luck hope this helped alittle

I don't agree with that. IMO, everyone is important enough to get full gear imo whatever it takes to get it. You must not have kids....you can't pick and choose which one you would rather not see get injured which your philosophy really depicts. I would think the youngest one would be the most injure prone since they're the least experienced at riding. I see your point, but to me it would be important for everyone to be equally protected. Everyone in the boat has a life jacket, same thing. This is just MY opinion just like it was his/yours.

I had raccoon eyes with that brain swelling concussion.

This really does explain a lot but is still no excuse.
There was a little kid in my neighborhood (when I was growing up) who was born mentally retarded but he was one hell of a likable kid.
I'm with Iowa. Get every oneALL thegear. If you wanna start using "hand me downs" of the older/biggest oneforthe younger kids once theyget bigger to save money thats fine. A couple hundred in safety equipment now could save thousands (and lots of pain)in the long run. I think all kids should be equipped too the max when it comes to safety equipment...
Side Note: Check out Denniskirk.com -they always have kids gear on sale for cheap.

Besides helmet, goggles &gloves.... boots are MANDATORY in my book, a bad ankle break could be a lifetime ingurey.....try used...you can't be the only parent out there
.... I've seen some good deals on the adv site.
Skateboard sites have some GREAT deals on elbow/knee pads .... not that I know...lol... Wrap them up and keep your fingers crossed.

When I bought my son his first pair of riding booots they were heavy duty leather, steel toe, above the ankle/to the calf boots and under $30. When he progressed and was riding faster and more ambitiously then I bought him a pair of Thors'. But cost was always a big issue. Off the top of my head I can think of alot of gear that could keep us all safer, butmany of usdon't have the money to afford it. But ride we do
