Guys,
The CRF 230 is an ole XR 200 motor from the mid 80's bored 30cc[&o]. Its a farm implement for chrisakes. The KLX is a more modern overhead cam, 4 valve, watercooled motor. Sadly however its also slow as molasses and the advantages of the KLX don't come into play until the upper end or the CRF runs hot. The KLX is also stock isn't it? breathing through a straw with lean jetting. The CRF though is better set-up (carb jetting, gearing, etc.)out of the box than the KLX.
I'm betting it should be close for these two.

I have a 06' KLX 250 that is dead stock save for a 13t counter sproket, and a buddy with a dead stock CRF 230 (at the time). There is a dirt drag strip at Durhamtown plantation where we ride, and we have drag raced from a dead stop a few times to about 50-60mph. The bikes are nearly equal, but I would pull him at the top end of the strip (3rd gear or so) and won each race by less than a bike lenght.
He just added the power-up jet kit and removed a baffle in his exhaust and I have the HMF pipe and dyno-jet kit being installed in the next week or so. I will let you guys know how the drag race goes once both bikes are opened up a bit.

Hey Racer01, we live in the Atlanta area and ride at Highland Park. We want to try out Durhamtown but haven't had the weather or opportunity. We need a weekend to stay and ride. I also am just starting out "again" in the dirt. I have been on the street for the last 20 years. I can't wait to get to D town I here it's great.

Just went riding for the first time with my 07 KLX 250 with a few buddies one of which had an 06 CRF 230. My other buddies 07 KLX is more broken in than mine and he raced the 230. Basically it was even until about second gear, then the KLX pulled away no problem. Both bikes are dead stock!

RE: crf 230[ modded] vs. klx 250 [with pipe]
easily stated- the CRF 230 is an old outdated bike w/new plasticsin an attempt tomake it look good. look at it, it's got rear drum brake and old convo forks. it's ugly and is strictly beginner material. at least w/the KLX, we can build it. I've had my KLX to indicated 90 mph, so bring on about any type of dirt bike for top speed races. the 230 is one of them bikes that is available, but i don't even waste my time looking at it. every manufacturer makes them- the XT line from Yamaha, DR from Suzuki, etc. heck, i'd take a KLX 110 over the 230 anyday, at least it's got a ton of accessories you can build it the way you want. if you can't beat your friend's 230, you can't ride. also, starting off in 1st gear on the KLX is ridiculous, it's a waste of time. 1st is for climbing really. slip it in 2nd, although you won't have to slip it much. shift around 8500 and you'll toast him.

Hard to believe Honda would put the "CRF" label on such a pathetic machine...
It's basically an XR. [:-]

Finally, a bike that the stock KLX will kick butt against

well i rode with the 230 today. we were goin down the road { 2nd gear } and he hit the gas then i did right after him and he was a few feet in front til i hit about 3rd gear and i pulled away. thanks to my tall gearing and his low end power but to his defense this is his first day riding but the klx is still alot faster on top end for sure.i like the 230 pretty good. really nice trail bike, i'd personally be happy with one but the klx is the bike for me for sure. once it gets broke in its awesome and i love it. i'm still waitin on my hmf pipe to get here.[:'(]
hopefully this week. but we got some pretty fun trails and some are tough but the klx can handle them { once i get a new tire ha } but now i dont feel bad bout ridin with him because he used to ride a crf 100 with us and i felt kinda bad bout it but now we oughta have fun instead of me havin fun!
