Off the line I'd say you're toast, but a few hundred yards later your taller gearing will beat his offroad gearing. I'd say most sub 400cc pure dirt machines top out under 70 mph, 4 strokes that is, 2 strokers are a whole different story.

I'd guess that you could edge him on top speed, but he will blow you away in any acceleration contest.

You're comparing apples to oranges here. He's got a race bike, you don't.

RE: crf 230[ modded] vs. klx 250 [with pipe]

A lot depends on the rider. Remember the guy who raced his boss who rode the WR450 or something like that, and I think he was on a KLX? But Dean's right, the KLX won't have much for the CRF, assuming he can ride at least as good as you.

Of course, anything could happen ... his spark plug wire could somehow work its way loose, maybe some water "condensed" in his gas tank, his CRF could develop a leaky head pipe when he wasn't looking ... you just never know about these things.

;)

Just don't place to much $$ on the race.

The CRF230 is almost in the farm bike category designed for recreational riders, I think the KLX250 would toast it. Have you guys actually had a look at one.

Yea, the 230X is an air cooled motor, I don't think its got the inverted forks or really a lot of money put into it. I think it falls under cheap trail/offroad bike. I'd say it would be closer than one might think...

He might have the holeshot, but the KLX might have enough grunt to pull the tall gears and come out on top, I really think so if the KLX has a pipe.

If the KLX can't smoke a CRF230 it's got to be slow. The CRF230 is a $3000 trail bike that weighs a metric ton. It's big heavy and slow.

Actuallythereported weight of the CRF 230 is 238 lb, and the KLX 250 is 262 lb. If you want to race Anybody ... spend money on mods, or replace.

My last bike was a crf 230, i had a pro circuit pipe ,hi flow air filter , rejetted carb and re ground cam,
the cam made the biggest improvement, but if you have a 13 tooth sprocket a think you can take him.
Its a fun little bike, but its lack of real suspension is its down fall ,
the 230 was stolen out of my truck ,that's how i ended up with my klx.Attachment 32604
