Well, there is a point I am trying to make. It would be MUCH better to have a wider/lower light than just a bigger light at the same place, IMO.

I seen a car with what seemed like fluctuating headlights. It caught my eye right off. During the day run a hid to catch drivers attention. Sorry to hear about your accident.

Read about the light "triangle." I've seen a number of smaller dual sport bikes with leds on both forks near the fender, towards the outside forming a light triangle. Significantly more 'visible.'

sphen, sorry to hear about your incident and glad to hear you are only banged up and not seriously hurt or worse. I was one of those fellers that gave up motorcycles soon after the first child was born. When they were late teens and I had plenty of life insurance, I got back into it about eight years ago on the KLX mostly trail riding.

@sphen: been thinking about you. What about getting a trials bike and sticking to the woods til the kids are grown? You’d come out a better bike rider in the long run, stay on two wheels and certainly not need ABS 😀

Be sure you don't draw more power than the charging system can provide. It also needs some power just to run the bike now too. Two 50w lights takes probably at least half the wattage produced by the alternator. Obviously LEDs make it lower, but again add them up so you KNOW what you will use. Small bikes have small alternators.

I caught a lot of flak when I mentioned this in the ADVriders, but I didn't care. I know some riders will overload the system and drain the battery, so I warn people. It isn't like cars, where there is so much output it almost doesn't matter what you do. It is compact and doesn't make a bunch. Heck a heated coat and grips can go over 100w easily.

Right. Thanks. I imagine accessories whose purpose is to generate heat (like grips) require more power than a couple of LEDs. But I’ll try to use math :^ )

Fwiw I have been running (2) 55w halogen lights with no issues but nothing else drawing power. I just looked up the specs alternator out put is 16 amps 14 volts
watts = 16 amps x 14 volts = 224 Watts

I like the light triangle idea. One could run half the lights off a lithium battery in a fanny pack giving redundancy to the lighting package but I know it would be a hassle plugging in and charging... Do people like Ricky Stator still rewind the stators for more output?

What else are you trying to run? The stator should be sufficient to run a couple LED lamps.
