As far as trails that depends on where we end up. I know what there is around Lake City/Silverton/Quray area. Don't know much about the stuff around Taylor Lake and Crested Butte.

Taylor lake is out as far as a base camp because they don't have anything available. Is Crested Butte or Pitkin base camp worthy?

 

Crested butte is. We stayed in crested butte south. Head up Cement Creek road and miles of trail/dirt roads branch off from there. Get yourself one of the laminated maps. Saved my butt a few times out there, the maps are really nice.

Doesn't look like I am having much luck finding anywhere to stay in Crested Butte either.

How about Almont? Found a couple cabins there or a lodge room, seems like its still reasonably close to all the riding around Crested Butte/Taylor Lake.

 

I think the pedal bike race went over cottonwood pass on road bicycles last year during the Tour of CO, but I have never went over that pass. I would look at it on google earth, you have a pretty big trailer there & can make your own judgement.

Most of the passes I went over, that rig would never make it!

I'll know more about the area mid august!

 

Since Taylor Lake doesn't have any cabins available, we won't be going over Cottonwood pass.

Just to be clear the rig posted is Eric's buddies he went with, not mine.

 

Landon, trying to get cabins and such in this area can be a little bit of a challenge. Some people go there every year and often have reservations way in advance. Taylor Park/lake area is the best centrally located spot for many of the rides in the area. I have camped near Pitkin, and it is a great jump-off for Hancock, Tomichee, Tincup and many other pass trails. There are cabins and such around Pitkin, but I don't have any names.

Almont has a nice rustic looking motel/hotel kind of thing, and there are some other accommodations in that area. Almont is not much of anything as a town, but because it's a major intersection for that area, you might find something there.

I've occasionally asked about room, condo, and cabin rental just out of curiosity in the past, and I thought just about everything in the whole area was higher than a cat's back unless you had some kind of deal lined up in advance.

 

No doubt we are clearly way behind the eight ball on making our arrangements. We didn't plan on going this year, I need to get away for a week and didn't really have any plans so I asked my buddy if he wanted to go out this year. He already had his vacation time scheduled for two weeks in July but didn't have anything planned. I understand we pretty much have to take what we can get at this point.

I did find lodge rooms in Almont for $85 a night. Not cheap by any means, buts it reasonable when divided between the 2 of us. It appears Almont has food and gas, plus Gunnison is only 10 miles away if we want to run down there to eat.

Once I get the vacation time approved from my boss we will book a room. Looks like we will be out July 21 thru the 27th.

 

Almont's a good location. You can do a lot of riding from there. Even some of the great 2-track and singletrack in the area not real close to Almont can be accessed very quickly as the road system is pretty fast right up to some of the best trails. I'll be up there in the first couple of weeks of August. I'll go to Westfest on one of those weekends which is happening in Buena Vista this year...just to the east of Taylor.

 

Good luck man, we had our lodging arranged almost 10 months a head of time.
