Default Changing the gearing to match the 07?

has anyone tried this? I would much like to have an overdrive gear on my 09 (seeing how 5th and 6th gear are practically the same)

just imagine.. shifting up to 6th when all your accelerating was done...... and having it make a difference... I wish I knew about this difference before I bought the bike!

could it be as simple as just ordering the OEM sprockets for the 07, and possibly the chain... and slapping it in there?

Don't think it will be that easy. Changing sprockets with affect all of your gears equally and not just the 5/6 difference. I took the approach of increasing the rear from 42 to 49 (lowers gear ratio and top speed), and buying both 13 & 15 front sprockets to compliment the stock 14. Most dirt riding is with the 13 up front, but if riding will be more high speed w/o much need for slower low-end, then switch to the 15. Takes about 15 minutes for me to switch them out. Longer chain was needed (110 link) but it works well for 13 to 15 front and 49 rear.

Transmission gearing is what changes the 5-6 ratio difference. You would have to split your cases to get to the gears in question. I would also love to get an overdrive.

Damnit, I just bought an 09 bottom end to use on my 07.. I hope I don't regret the 6th gear

Then again I don't do much highway if at all, but an OD gear is nice especially with the low-revving 351

Now I'm scared that I made the wrong choice!

Don't worry, be happy! With the oomph of the 351 you can raise your overall gearing if you need the high speed. I don't think the difference in 6th between the '07 & '09 is all that big a deal.

Yah screw it, I'll just be happy I'm riding again

Now that I think of it though I'll probably keep my old motor as spare parts.

You've got all the parts you need, swap the gears from the 07 to the 09 bottom end if you feel so inclined.

While I would like another gear on my KLX, and often try to upshift to 7th, I can't say that the bike suffers terribly from lack of the tall 6th.

He bought the newer bottom end to NOT have to split the cases.

I made a point to count my gears because of this lol.... after a couple rides of doing so it comes naturally now! I'm surprised I ever rode without doing so.......
