Default Can anyone tell me if my compression releaser is broke?! (video)

I re-did my head gasket, I'm 99.99999999% sure the timing is correct, but the bike will not start.

It snounds normal on cranking, and I've gotten it to put a couple times, but that's about it. It is getting spark and fuel.

But, when I pull the valve cover, and manually turn the crank, the ACR makes a clicking noise once per rev.. I've never noticed that noise before - pretty sure I would have. The Kawi manual doesn't give too much info about it either.

Can anyone tell me if this looks to be functioning correct before I rip my hair out and punch myself in the *****?

Thanks!

mmmm That doesn't seem quite right.
Its pretty loud so you would imagine you might have heard it before.
What's it catching on?

I don't see anything that it's catching on.. Just seems to be REAL quick - within like 1mm of movement it pops.

I guess I can pull the cams again and try to figure it out - but I was trying to avoid that unless I know that it's broke or not.

thanks

I just went out to the shed and pulled the plug from the stator cover and manually turned the motor over a few times.
I didn't pull the cam cover.
I didn't hear any tick.

Hey man - thanks for checking that out.. I figured something was up.

I guess next step is to pull that cam, and just play with it a bit to see if I can make it go away. If not, new exhaust cam needed I think? I don't think that's an assembly that can be replaced.

Thanks again

That clicking seems to coincide with the closing of the exhaust valve. When the tab on the ACR gets past the top of the valve bucket, the exhaust valve closes........When held open by the ACR, it is open by about 1.5mm or .06".

All of that would be normal and may be the source of the KLX300/250 ticking noise in the head.

Ride on

Sounds like a problem with the pin!
This may help.

That could be right.
I'm trying to think it through.
Maybe that click is the normal operation of the ACR at low rpm?
mmmm
I didn't hear a click but I didn't remove the cam cover.

Like I said before, I never noticed that clicking noise when doing the procedure the last time.. That's something I think I would have remembered hearing..

And it explains why the bike won't start. If it's stuck in the "open" mode, it's not going to have good compression.. Hence the couple quick putts I got when trying to start it.. I know the timing is on, I did the 32 pin counting from one to the other, and it's at TDC, and the hash marks are level with the top of the head.

I know it's sparking fine too.. Doesn't make sense!

Not to mention - this tick is loud enough that you'd hear it even with the valve cover on.. So if neilaction heard nothing, that means something's up.. I wish I had another KLX to see! Can anyone else try this and report back to base?

I have just been and turned the motor over again.
I hear no click.
This time it was very slow and very quiet listening as hard as I could.

Can you do a compression test?
