I was looking around the top end of my bike yesterday while cleaning it up a bit and in between the fan and the engine is a canister looking contraption. I looked the on worldofpowersports.com parts diagram and it shows that is a cali only emissions canister. Would all bikes come with these or just bike headed for sale in California?

Tacoma: sometimes vehicles will come CA compliant, but be sold new from other dealers. Sometimes these other dealers will be near CA. My '06 didn't come with the canister, but I think the CA compliant unit did. Mine did come with the network of hoses for air injection into the exhaust. Somewhere along the way they got lost.

Keeping it maintains better emissions.
Removing it drops a little weight, makes the area a little cleaner when doing work there, and is a violation of EPA regulations. Also, plugging the clean air injection into the exhaust should cool the exhaust (to the detriment of emissions, because this clean air helps burn unburned fuel). Hotter exhaust moves at a higher velocity, which has benefits. There's been some discussion here that cooler exhaust could therefore reduce performance. I don't see that anyone has dyno'd this change and it's likely quite small.

So why do you hate clean air?

 

You pretty much nailed it. No real gain of any value either way. I left mine on because I didn't feel like getting the junk to remove it. It isn't any big deal to just put it back on after doing anything with the valves since it is only done every year or five.

 

I love me some clean air, just surprised to see it since i never really looked too good in there. Its gonna stay on if their is no gain to it

 

It injects air into the exhaust under certain circumstances - decel being one of them.. Also can cause decel popping and abnormally high exhaust temps - exhaust components that get so hot as to melt stuff around them (EG, the airbox) as well as your favorite leg.

Ditch it if/when you go for biggy power with mods - recycle your own beer cans, drive a hybrid, destroy your neighbors 2 stroke weed eater and leaf blower, carpool to the "gentlemens clubs", ride your kids' skateboard to work, eat only non-GMO,______________________ , _______________________________ , _________________________ , to compensate..

 

How many degrees does it raise the header pipe temperature?

My air box and side plate is still intact and my leg is hotter on the non-polution equipped KLX650. Why is that?
