Buying a blown KLX250S
Hello everyone,
I've got the opportunity to buy 2009 KLX250S with a blown engine. Everything else on the bike seems in fair shape. The owner claims a nail was put in the crankcase as sabotage. Who knows it the person is telling the truth.
He is wanting to trade for a gun I own that I would value at $300 on low end - $400 on high end.
Obviously the engine would need rebuilt or replaced. I'm fairly mechanical savey, but have never rebuilt a bottom end. I'm assuming the whole bottom end is trash, but won't know till I tear it apart if I go this route.
Question 1: do you think this is a good deal considering the vague scenario I have?
Question 2: Is rebuilding, replacing altogether with Ebay engine or something best route? At some point obviously cost of rebuild by not be worth it at some point.
Just wanting to pick the brains of the smart people on this website.
Thank you!

Rebuilding the bottom end (which I'm doing) is expensive, probably within a few hundred dollars of the cost of a used engine.
And if you need top end stuff it'll definitely be cheaper to go used.
I got 68,000 miles out of my engine before it died so they are pretty reliable.

Good to know, thanks for sharing. I'm having a hard time locating a used engine. Is just keeping an out on Ebay the best thing to do here?
Also do you feel the bike is worth the $3-400 considering the issue I'm getting into? I'm honestly thinking about just piecing it out instead, but would love to have a dual sport at my disposal.

hey,
that's crazy. i'm new to dual sports but i love it already. already racked over 3k on my klx250 and still climbing amist this covid epidemic. i saw a listing on clist awhile ago about a wrecked klx250 up in new york. but i can't seem to find it now though. but keep your eyes out, these klx250's aren't anything new (unless it's EFI) so spare parts and used parts should be plentiful.

it was 600 obo for the entire bike. So i imagine you would've gotten it for 400 or 500 if you played your cards right. Can't seem to find it now as i just searched for it. But deals come and go, and it feels like it's more of a seasonal thing too. I bought my '18 klx250 for 3k in the dead of winter pretty much brand new with a few hundred miles on it.
