Default Brand new KLX - Recommended Rev range for 'Breaking In Period'

Hi guys. Just picked up my brand new KLX 250 2013 last week. Just reading the manual now and it says that you need to break in the bike as far as max revs go.

Maximum engine speed

0 - 500 miles
4 000 r/min (rpm)

500 - 1 000 miles
6 000 r/min (rpm)

Essentially this is near impossible unless you don't go over 25 MPH haha. Is this something to be worried about ?

In any case i guess i best hold of doing the clutch trick until I've done 1000 + miles.

I think that the best advice is to try and vary engine speed(no endless miles of freeway droning). Break in is really just getting the piston rings to seat and they need cylinder pressure to do that so don't be afraid to romp on it-just don't make a habit of bouncing off the rev limiter constantly. Do a few heat cycles, change the oil and filter(inspect the filter for evidence of metal(some is ok, large piles are not)). After that just ride it like you would normally do. Enjoy

this...vary engine speed..do not sit at a specific RPM for very long periods of time..forget staying below 4k...hard to do

Default Popular Mechanics agrees

I recently came across the alternative theory of break-in and if I ever get a new bike I am going to do it.

Popular Mechanics agrees:

New Car Care ? How to Take Care of a New Car

A friend who rebuilds antique engines made this comment:

"That really isn't much different from what Perfect Circle recommended on an automotive rebuild sixty or more years ago. The routine was to get the engine set up and filled with all fluids. Start the engine and immediately take the vehicle out on the highway. At ~25 mph, mash on it and run it up to 55 or so. Release the throttle and let it coast back down to 25, then mash on it again. Do that a half-dozen times then drive it. Babying or idling a new engine is the absolute worst thing you can do. Don't over-rev it, but work it hard right out of the gate."
