Default Bike weighed.

First I guess I need to mention what is on and off my bike to make things relevant.

Swapped - Exhaust system to Big Gun full system, Carby to Tm33 pumper, Handle bars to Renthal, Indicators to smaller units, speedo and tach to GPS, cc increased to 300, tool pouch to Otter box, front sprocket 14 to 13, Fuel tank to Clarke.

Removed - rear rack, rear fender extension, chain guard, side stand switch, clutch switch, rear brake switch, speedo cable, carby push cable, mirrors, air box lid, seat strap, rear foot pegs, ignition switch and lock, helmet lock.

Added - bash plate, hand guards, front fender bag.

(well that's all i can remember)

I bolted a wooden plate to a trolley jack.
Put on the scales and another piece of wood and bingo.

I weighed the bike 3 times and each time got the same reading.
125.7 Kgs
276.5 lbs

You can just make out the digits.

That is with no fuel and tools/spares removed.
(oil and water left as is)

I believe this to be reasonably accurate as when I weighed myself with this set up I got the same disappointing number I always get.

I also checked the scales to see if weight distribution made any significant change in the final number, and it didn't.

I wish I had done this on day 1 so i would have a reference point.

Thanks for this Neil, I am surprised the thing is still so heavy.
I have similar modifications - staintune pipe, 300cc, Clarke tank etc etc.
With no blinkers so or mirrors, I reckon my bike is 10kg lighter than stock.

Iam buying a KLX450 soon and note (from magazine reports) that the wet weight (no fuel) is much the same as you got for your KLX. All I can say is that if the 450 feels as light as my KLX250, I will be very happy.

Below is the copy of a post I made on another forum regarding weight loss

KLX weight loss – I may have been deceiving myself with the 10kg weight loss.
I have checked out all the parts I have removed and made some recalculations. I weighed the parts in plastic bags and I have listed the main bits, though there are some minor brackets/bolts etc in each bag.

Removed from KLX
Headlight/instruments/brackets/blinkers/speedo cable = 3.2kg
Rear Rack/blinkers/fender extension = 1.6kg

Fan/Pillion pegs/de ice circuit/helmet holder/chain guide+guard
Rubber cover/sidestand switch/etc =1.9kg
Original exhaust sytstem = 4.8kg
Ignition Barrel = 0.6kg
Fuel tank = 2.3kg
Original sprocket 42T = 0.7kg
Mirrors = 0.5kg

Total = 15.6kg

Replacements

Headlight 0.6kg
Sprocket 0.4kg
Staintune full system 3.1kg
Clarke tank 1.7kg
Vapour trail tech speedo 0.3kg
Blinkers 0.2kg

Total = 6.3kg

Meaning a saving of 9.3kg (20.5lb)

My bike originally had a 50T Standard steel sprocket as fitted to the KLX300.
This thing weighed an enormous 1.25kg, so this gets me closer to shedding the full 10kg.
The fitted headlight is an acerbis.

Thanks Mekon, interesting numbers.

I wondering if I can shave down to under 120kgs.
I think this will be possilbe without too much trouble but after that it will be a lot harder.

Anyway, that is my goal.

With mynew KTM, I don't need to worry about weight, that's for sure.. ANything I do will add weight. Because this thing is so damn light. I was expecting when I first rode it to feel bigger, and thinking it would be a tad bit more challanging in the woods.. Until I rode it a bit, it's totally the other way around. It feels like a 125 or somethin, but with 525cc's..
Neat how they save weight, like the axle nut and axle, when I took them out, I couldn't help but notice how feather light little parts like that are compared to the KLX.

I should be pretty close to you in weight Neil. I have removed most of the same stuff you have.

It has been said before but, I think that Kawi really low balled the dry weight of the klx.

That would be good.
An 09 must be close to an 06 in stock weight.

Keep the info flowing.

Dry weight of the 09 I belive was quite a bit more than the claimed dry weight of the 06-07.

It would be interesting to what it weighs though. Just make sure since your are riding it there that your gas tank is filled that way we know what to deduct for its gas contents.

'09 claimed weight is like 277 whereas the '06/'07 is claimed to be 262 I believe. I don't think that is correct though. If anything, the '09 should be lighter than the '06 with no rack and having virtually everything else the '06 has. the '09 does have a lot of plastic on it so who knows.
