Default Beating a dead horse: Trailtech Vapor downsides?

Hi all,

Haven't posted/ridden in a while due to knee surgery. Anyways, I am finally going to get a real speedometer on my bike (crunched the stock one and have been running a ghetto bicycle one for the time being). Anyways, a lot of you have gone the Trailtech Vapor route to upgrade. However, I've seen several people have issues with the Trailtech, so it has it's downsides. Anyways, my options are to either get a vapor, or find someones used stock unit. Here's how I see it:

Vapor Pro's:
Accurate speedometer
Nicer looking than stock
Reasonably priced
Good customer support

Vapor Con's:
More fragile speed sensor
Less reliable?
Harder to mount
Have to cut the radiator hoses

Does anyone want to weigh in on the situation? Thanks!

My Vapor speedo has had issues since about a week after installing it. Started with intermittent failure about 2 weeks out, then failed completely. RPM and temp sensors still work though the RPM sensor wanders plus or minus 1000 rpm. They sent me a new speedo line but I have not fitted it yet. My opinion: not very reliable, hard to read and probably not worth it. Sometimes ghetto is good, just remember to change up when the engine starts to cut out.

You can also adjust the odometer to match the route sheet on enduros. Stock tripmeter does not allow you to add 3 tenths.

I don't know. I love the Vapor on my '06. The cutting of the rad hose is simple and probably the best way to get a real temp reading. The tach issue was an irritation until someone suggested that I connect the tach wire to the existing factory tach wire...perfection. The unit doesn't seem at all fragile to me, and my unit has been on this bike since new...and this bike has tons of hard off road miles on it. Just got back from 2+ weeks in the Moab area and loved the data this thing provides. The temp guage may be my favorite...along with the exact speedo and odo...if you set up the correct numbers...or set it by GPS.

Thanks for the responses.

How do you guys have yours mounted? Did you use the bracket that came with the unit, or fab up something custom? It seems like most people have to do some rearranging to make things fit...
