I had an 81 Yamaha 650, it was ugly with the straight up and down motor, then I got an 84 Yamaha 750 V Twin, and that thing was cool. I have a picture of my cat sitting on it somewhere. I think the Yami's looked better.

 

I bought a new 81 Yamaha Maxim 550 when I was in high school and kept it thru college, I considered the 650 Special as well but the Maxim looked much nicer and was a 4 cylinder, I made a couple coast to coast trips on that bike with out a hitch (other then the hail storm in Connecticut).

My room-mate had a Kawasaki 750 LTD which was a very nice bike (his parents were richer than mine).
