I use Motul 10 W 40 mineral base oil, works for me here in Australia. My clutch has never slipped and is smooth through out each gear. I change the oil every 1000kms which is about 622 miles. I change the oil filter every 2nd oil change. I clean the air filter every 1000kms, unless I have been offroad on a very dusty and dirty track I will clean it after the ride.

Did you ever smell that stuff? Maybe its not the same but we used to call the positrack or limited slip differential additive "sperm whale oil". It stinks.

The oil is your choice. Personally I perfer full synthetic because of the greater heat & wear protection. Currently I run with Royal Purple MaxCycle 10w-40. And have used Mobil 1 4T in the past. I change my oil & filter around 1000-3000miles (depends on conditions I've driven in).

Suggested oil changes intverals:
500miles or after trail riding
1000miles if on dirt roads & trails
3000miles if used as a street commuter

 

Some of us older guys probably remember the smell of the fork oil from bikes in the 60's and 70's, I wonder if that was maybe whale oil. The first thing you did back in those days was change that awful stuff.

 

I always use bel-ray and if it's not available when i'm ready to change oil it may be gold spectro till the next change
