About That Time Again.............(tire time)
Yep, just beware of the shipping charges. AMT wanted $25 for 7-10 shipping and $50 for 3 day. So it worked out better for me to get them locally.
i got my last set of tmII's in 3 days and the shipping was under $20. i'm not in a hurry to get them as i have that dual sport in the pine barrons in 2 weeks and won't be changing tires between now and then.
Put on another 20 miles tonight on a few twisty roads. Under 50 it is extremely flickable, yet stable. You can whip it down and it will stay there, no wander, no oscillations. I did find though that there is no audible warning before the tires break loose. Rolling along around 30 I gradually increased rear brake pressure until it let go. It takes quite a bit, and even when it does let go its not violent, it does however leave a nice stripe. Being that I only have 70 or so miles on them I don't think they are really broken in yet either. I took a trip down a hard pack and pea gravel road and they ride smooth and handled nice. They do let go quicker than knobbies when braking but I'd not hesitate to take a less than maintained road.
Now for the real surprise, wet grass traction. The front tire will dig hard enough to just barely lift the rear before locking and sliding. The rear however, if you even look at the rear brake it will lock up. I was having some fun sliding around the yard, roll slow into a turn and slip the clutch and see how long I could ride it out sideways. And no marks in the yard! Needless to say I got cocky and low sided. There is a fine line between slipping and 0 traction what so ever. If you are spinning and its actually up in the powerband, your rear wheel is on the verge of trying to pass the front. If you can get it spinning and keep it under 6500 or so, you can slide it around pretty good and still be in control.
I really cranked on it and ended up doing a 180 in about the length of the bike, and with the wet grass my boot slipped too and I just fell over laughing my *** off. Nothing sillier than a 5mph low side
Picked it up and decided I better put it away for the night before I do hurt myself.
Albeit this guy is running a CRF450, the KLX will kick it out just as easily in the grass....
