250 Blues
Problem: When I went to buy my duals sport I went to get a DRZ 400, none in stock so I let the salesman talk me into the klx without test ridding it first.
Whose to blame: Me obviously! I wouldnt buy a truck without a test drive so I don't know why i bought a bike that I had never ridden.
What I have done: All of the basic mods Including a full Muzzy system and a jet kit!
WhatI am struggling with: Lack of torquein 3rd through 5th gear ( I can't carry the front end through 3rd gear!!!!!!!!!)
The Pickle: I can' decide if it is worth sinking another$500 to $900 more in upgrades or just cut ties and find a 400cc or 450cc Dual sport( I know that that will be around $6500 to 8k)
What i want from ya'll: Just answer me these questions;
What kind of performance can I exspect with the 300cc kit? (Wheelies through 3rd, 4th maby!?)
How good can i make the stock suspension without complete upgrades? ( Aggressive trails to mild MX)
Don't think that i havent given this bike a chance either i've had it scince aug. of 06 and put 1000 miles on it I just dont want to put any more moneyintothis bike and still be dissapointed.
Also if any one is reading this thinking that this bike is not for them now let me say that for a beginner to novice rider this bike is fun, but I have been riding for 14 yrs and raced for 8 of those years so I would consider myself a fairly aggressive rider.And I weigh 175I just want a little more UMPH!!!!!!!!

Cut your losses. I got the 300 kit and weigh the same as you.....I still want more umph and I've only been riding 5-6 months. It's a great little trail bike that can go anywhere and its good enough for me now but.....if ya want close to mx performance, got the cash and don't mind the additional maintenance take a look at the Husky510. jmho

i'm the same as you but with more riding time and racing about the same in MX. the 250 definitely is a panzy in stock form. you can look at my mods and i'm pretty happy with how i made it, but it's still no powerhorse. but i did just buy a 300 cylinder and plan on having it bored to 331 this spring. this will give me about what a late '80's 125 was running like. i can ride wheelies thru 3rd but i weigh 150. i think a pumper carb would help even more. but i was like you, i didn't test ride it either, but i wasn't expecting too much either. if i could do it all over again, i would locate a Husqvarna TE250 as that line is sweet and dot legal too. my 331 upgrade will cost me $600 total with shipping and including the used cylinder i bought. i will install it too to save money. it's your call but i totally see what you mean. i don't think the 250 is too small a bike for you, you just need more power. there really aren't that many alternatives in ds territory. the DRZ is old tech and a hog and doesn't have that much power either as i rode one 2 years ago and couldn't get it to loft the front end at all. it's very heavy and extremely tall. a new bike will cost you a lot more dough than upgrading the powerplant on the klx but it's up to you. i like the new yamaha WR's too.

Sounds like you wouldnt have been satisfied with the DRZ400 either.

For what you are after, I'd recommend either the Husqvarna TE series or KTM EXC. After much research, I think I'd lean toward the KTM 450EXC for my own purposes, but both are awesome bikes and when you consider that you don't have to upgrade anything on them, their price begins to look better. And by the time you put the money, time, and effort into the KLX to get it where you want it, you will be within about $1K to $1.5K of the KTM. The KLX is great for what it was designed for and it can be opened up, but even at its best, it sounds like you will be wanting more.

Thanks for the input guys and again please don't think I am crashing on the klx. I realize that it is a great little bike just not what I was looking for.
I am just trying to determine if I can turn it into what I want. ( WHEELIES THRU ALL THE GEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

you would have to drastically change the gearing to wheelie thru 4th i think..... wouldnt be any good on the asphalt... unless your small.... 140lbs or so...
