Default 2009 shifting to nuetral

2009 model - Having a very hard time shifting into nuetral with the motor idling. Jumps over nuetral shifting up or down. Is a lot easier with the motor off, but still can be a pain. I have installed the old style shift star, but the problem was about the same with the original one, Anyone got similar problem and a solution?

First thing I'd check is that I have enough "slack" in the clutch cable...it sounds like it may be dragging a bit. Next, make sure my oil isn't in need of changing. Third, I like the replacement shift star better than the one that came on my 09. Fourth, could be a shifter fork adjustment needed, or, something else that I've never had to fix before, such as a broken clutch-pack spring, or warped clutch plate...something like that.

Hope it's an easy fix for you!

OOPS, I misread your post, you DO have the replacement star in...that's good. But, if everything about the clutch is checked and good, it makes me wonder if there is anything you could have done in replacing the shift star that could contribute to this. I don't recall when I did mine if there were any way to mess it up...such as positioning of a spring, or something like that. Hopefully one of the really knowledgeable folk will be along soon to help.

I let a friends kid ride my 09 klx and he dumped it doing about 15 mph. The shift star needed to be replaced, the new stars profile was different. Check out planet klx/four stroke works websites for pics of the modified shift star they show. Looks a lot like the 09 profile. I didnt need to preload the spring as described. Read up as the mod might help your bike maybe not.... Good luck

I would also check to make sure you have a little slack in the clutch cable and also make sure that when you turn the front wheel left to right that the clutch cable is not getting pulled a bit because it is routed incorrectly.
The stock cables are non too long.

Make sure you pull the clutch all the way in when you shift to neutral. If your pulling with just one or two fingers the lever will hit your hand and not disengage the clutch fully. It will still go into neutral, just not as easy. Is this your first bike? You may just have to get used to finding it.
