Default Down Shifting

How damaging to the bike is it to downshift through the gears by clicking it down while holding the cluth cin until you reach 1st gear? I was told by some, that it doens't hurt the bike, but others tell me I should click through all the gears individually as opposed to holding the cluthc in and jsut going down through all of them at one time.

Does that make sense or should I try and explain it better??

Thanks!

I will try to let out the clutch after downshifting and try not to go more then two gears at a time. Most of the time I will let out the clutch between every gear just incase the light turns green then I don't have to hunt for a gear. I've heard that shifting all at once puts more wear and tear on the tranny because it has to spin up to match the 1st gear ratio, where as if you downshift by gears it doesn't have to spin up a whole lot.

I feel that going down through the gear with the clutch in is OK.. but as you will notice when you reach 1st gear it makes a hard and bad chunk.. I will do it but not till 1st wile you are moving[&:] if you come to a stop and go down the gears its OK

[]If I'm making any sense tonight..[>:]

If I know for sure that I am going to have to stop at a stop sign, I'll just hold the clutch in and go down through the gears. If I am coming up to a set of lights, I don't go down into first until I am stopped.

Yes Ian you are making sense!

I agree. If I know I am def. stopping I will hold the clutch and D/S all the way otherwise I will only go into 2nd. Hate the clunk the bike makes going into first.....sounds like it hurts.[&o]

on the way to a stop i go down on the gears holding in the clutch then releasing and blip the throtle at the same time. then when i'm in a complete stop. thats when i go down to first. i don't like it either when you go hard in first while moving. but you should be ok.

EXCELLENT advice everyone. I have actually heard AND felt that clunk!!! I usually go down through all of them, but I will try and concentrate on making it down to 2nd before I hear the clunk! I hoped that I wasn't doing any damage, but I sometimes have a little trouble with squealing th etires when I make a mistake. Nothing major, but inevitable, my husband hears me and asks, "Was that you"?

Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!! I knew I could count on ya'll!!!!!

Yea it's OK. I usually don't down shift unless I am going to continue and just need to slow for traffic. At stops I just pull in clutch as I am braking, drop through the gears stopping at neutral and then brake to the stop. Then clutch out and reengage before going into first. I also don't mind the clunk, kind of depends on hard I push down to get into 1st.
Not down shifting at every stop saves on engine and trany wear.
Brakes are cheap compared to motor.[sm=proof.gif]
