Lightbulb 2009 250sf problems ?

I have a 2009 250sf i got with 7000 miles on it ive been riding it a bit this year with some minor idle issues that i cannot figure out everyone just says the bikes cold blooded. The problem is A the bike wont idle at 1350 rpm its always around 2000 , and B the bike will not start without choke and i have to leave the choke on for 5-10 mins or it will just choke out and die, my biggest concern is with the choke on cold start , with the bike sitting at 4-5000 rpms every cold start wouldn't that cause some unnecessary engine wear. ive tried adjusting the idle every which way it doesnt seem to change. Id like to get as much miles out of this engine as possible i just feel like running it hard on cold starts like that is gonna kill it way sooner. The seasons about over here in ohio im thinking about getting a carb rebuild kit im not sure if that would help or not though.

This might seem stupid but check that the clamps on both ends of the carburetor are properly tightened. I had a similar problem after forgetting to tighten the clamps.

first check for vacuum leaks.
If that's good then you probably just need to setup your pilot circuit. Lot's of threads on here about jetting for various altitudes and reading the plug.
If you still cant adjust idle with the idle screw then your, pull throttle cable is probably too tight. Should still be able to adjust it higher than 2000 if that was the case tho.

My SF I start it on choke, let it run for long enough to put my lid and gloves on (30 seconds), open throttle slightly, disengage choke and ride away. Bike will "clear it throat" in the first 20m or so.
I'm at sea level, #40 pilot jet, pilot screw is somewhere around 2.5 to 3 turns out from fully seated.

My choke won't stay on. It pops back in after a few seconds? Anyone have this problem or a cure?

I put one of these on the KLR650. It should fit the KLX. It also allows for partial enricher opening.

I'm a long time KLR guy & I know that some guys remove the bar mounted lever & use the KLX plunger on the ericher. as a sidebar, one of the guys did FA ratios and found that the enricher circuit actually makes the mix more lean at high RPMs. CVK40 but same design

Thanks everyone who posted, after some time i decided to rip the bike apart and rebuilt the carb , during all this i discovered the source of the problem A the gas tank had a decent amount of brown flaky stuff / sludge gumming up the fuel filter and B the previous owner had taken the carb side fuel filter and cramed it back in the wrong place it was crumpled and jammed in the fuel line restricting fuel flow. After rebuilding the carb and putting it all back together the bike fires right up without choke even on a cold start and i can get the idle speed exactly where i need it to be.
