Yep, We sure pay a premium here.

I got a quote here for a Big Gun full system here. Nearly $A1300!!
I ordered 1 online and had it landed here for under $A600! Including postage!!!
Brand new. No issues.

just bought a pair of Sidi Crossfires.
Here $A650.
On line? Half that in the US.
I ended up buying a pair on ebay from a guy in the states.
He bought them but they were too small.
Won the auction and paid $A200 including Postage.

They are practically giving stuff away.

It's not that they're special.
My initial point was the high cost or the WR250R in Australia compared to similar dual sport models.
I understand in the US the WR250R is about $7000 US?
The current exchange rate makes that $7530 AUS.
WTF.
I feel like I'm being ripped off.
For the money, down here, I'll take the KTM.

whats so special about ktms, and how everyone loves them? I mean they look nice, and do perform, but is there some secret society about them or something? they seem to make the most dual sports.... but really everyone is like obsessed with them, i know 3 guys with 3 ktms.....

i bought my wr250r for 5650. for those that think it is too tall it can be lowered 1 inch with a turn of a wrench.the ktm dualsport was 7800.
good post, the quoted price above for this bike was incorrect. I like the bike, just that I don't care for the tank/shroud design. It's really wide.

So whats so big about a ktm 250 two smoke, and a kawi or yami, or suzk 250 two smoke? why pay that much more?
Because the Kato's can be plated.
Makes a huge difference as to where you can ride even if you don't go on the highway.
Well it makes a big difference here in WestOz.

More bounce to the ounce.
We don't get many ADR (road legal) 2 strokes down here in Aus.
As far as I know none of the "big four" offer ADR 2 stroke off road bikes in any guise.
Sure we can get CR/YZ/KX etc, but you can only use them on closed circuits.
2 strokes aren't dead yet despite what Honda thinks.
It just seems it's the European brands that are giving ua a choice at present.
Again, it's not a KTM thing.

It could be a TM thing.
OOOOHH. Bomb.....show me the twisties.[sm=gears.gif]

It could be a "Huski" thing.

Even a Gas Gas if the price is right.

If they were $5600 down here I'd buy one too. The Wr250X though.

btw- those KTM's all look the same. why make three bikes that virtually are identical. I don't get it either ems. I'd take the Yami anyday over those KTM's. Nice bikes, but way overpriced imo.
The pictured bikes are three different displacements. These are race bikes and they all handle differently and the different displacements can be important for fitting into the various class displacement rules.

KTM is one of the few that is still updating new model two strokes which are still competitive for woods racing and enduros. Japanese mfgs are selling the same old two strokes they were making 5 years ago with little or no updates, if you can buy one at all. For example, go to Kawasaki's web site and see if you can find a 2-stroke KX 125 or 250. Some people like two strokes better, so they'll naturally be buying KTMs now even if they might have formerly been on another brand.

As far as price, the KLX450 lists for $7300. I got my KTM 450 EXC for less than that. And the KTM is 50 state street legal. And there are parts and aftermarket galore available for it. And they run great, and handle great, and are bullet proof reliable. Those things might have something to do with their popularity.

I'll give ya my take on the two smokes

First would be weight... only 220 lbs
Second no engine braking, which I really like in sugar sand....gas it .... brrrrap.... let off gas and coast, no clutch reqd.....then gas it again when ready...brrrrap.
Third and very important "power band" lol
Lastly the smell of two smoke oil buring in the morning.... mmmm

The unique thing about ktm is that they make a 300cc smoker with a wide ratio tranny and it has a lot of torque (unusual for a smoker)....electric start and plate-able is just icing on the cake.

But you would not want to do a lot of asphalt on one thou.....that's where the klx shines. But I could not think of a better street legal hooligan bike than a smoker.

Price wise....its cheaper than Brian's 450but not much. No valves either, just reeds.....real easy rebuild....but it better be because you will be doing it quite often.
