2006 KLX, need longer clutch cable
Hey all, first post here.
Sorry if this has already been covered, I went through the search feature and couldn't find exactly this scenario.
Recently picked up a 2006 KLX, bone stock with about 17k on it. I do a fair amount of my riding off road, single track or tight woods riding, and I could not stand up comfortably with the factory bars.
I got a pair of Pro-taper ATV HI bars, which are a good bit (2.5-3") taller, as well as 2" total width wider. I might end up trimming them back 2" narrower, to aid in fitting between trees and obstacles.
Anyway, while fitting the new bars, I realize that the clutch cable isn't going to make it. I tried messing with the routing a little bit, but not too much. Is there a good OEM clutch cable that would give me a few (I think 2 would do nicely) more inches over the 2006 factory cable? I assume nothing is going to have the heat shields for the header area.
Thanks in advance,
Pat.

Motion Pro makes a +3 cable for the KLX. I've got one on mine now. Everything matches up perfectly like the stock cable. Or you could go with a KLR650 (gen 2 from what I've read; p/n 54011-0556) that's reported to be 4" longer - though I can't verify that.

Update, made the factory cable work, not exactly sure how... it must have been hung up somewhere on my first attempts. It's definitely just long enough, but I think I may end up taking 1" off of each side of the new bars to bring them back to factory width. Also, very pleased with Pro-Taper ATV Hi's on the bike, big transformation off road. Put on Tusk racing aluminum handguards too, they're great and bolt right up to the Pro-Tapers. They are very heavy duty.

Just going to post this on a few threads. I have an 09SF, and was looking for a longer clutch cable. A KLX300 cable was exactly 1" longer than stock (and what I use now for raised bars) it JUST fits.
I read on ADVforums and elsewhere that the gen 2 KLR650 cable would work and was +4. By my measurement it was +3" from my stock cable, but it doesnt work. All fits fine at the lever and clutch (independently), but there is not enough adjustment in the housing length to allow you to bolt it on (housing wont go short enough to get you enough slack to hook it up at both ends). Thought id save someone the $20 and time trying it. Not sure how others got it to work, but couldnt even get it close on my 09. It was part # 54011-0556 CABLE, CLUTCH (PSP Kawasaki) that didnt work.
