From past experience, bikes do tend to run lean from the factory. I know about 99% of you guys have modded your bikes, but is it worth re-jetting a completely stock bike? I see a lot of people are changing the main jet, but they also have slip-on's airbox mod, etc.
If you are at sea level or anywhere near, the stock #118 main jet is too lean; it's in there soley for emissions purposes. I would try bumping that to a #120 and raising the needle one notch Make sure your fuel screw is opened 1.5 turns.

Do a search. You'll find plenty of info on it.

I noticed that on my wife's bike when I was running out the gas and I had it choked the pipe would get red, lean sounds about right.

i had the same issue with my '09. the dealer told me that it was kawasaki runs 'em lean from the factory to pass emissions. the carb setting is fine for some people, but its to lean. the dealer threw a 38 pilot jet in mine and it runs way better

the only time mine glowed was when i first bought it (used). carb needed cleaned and jets were partially plugged (and needle buildup). cleaned it and never had any more issues with it.

The only two times my header ever glowed was when I left the choke out and fuel switch off. Stupid me, never do that again. The second time was when I was racing across the desert at over 8k rpm's for over 30mins.

Pull the plug and have a look at it. If it is white you are running too lean. It should be light to medium tan color.
