Keep shopping, drz's have been around for a looooooong time, if you are smart you should be able to find a used one in real good shape for $2k or so, be patient and you will get a bike that is suited to your needs......also if you see a good deal on a xr650 or dr650 they may make a good huntin bike for ya, albiet a little heavier, but life is a compromise.

 

Oh good lord man, I missed this part of your post. For once a year the klx will be plenty fun and do just fine, that is a good deal, we have a least one member on here that is a moderator, that refuses to get new springs and he is every bit of 250 lbs.....he loads up the klx and goes on adventure rides with luggage.

Good luck shopping, I was thinking about ripping up some soft trails.

The patience advice paid off. 2001 DZR400s with 602 miles for $2800-all the bike I'll ever need, and I'll learn to live with the 'HELLO, I'M HERE' yellow.
