09 KLX 250s: Second Owner, a few questions and looking for advice.
According to the dealership I bought my bike from, it was a trade in on a new bike from the original owner. I snuck a peek at the receipt from the transaction and it looked like this was indeed the case. The bike had 3730 showing on the odometer when I bought it and as far as I can tell, it was all stock from the factory with no after-market parts.
I've had it a couple months now and I haven't done much to it except change tires and sprockets to make her perform better off-road. I'm considering doing the free mods real soon and I will probably bite the bullet and get a new slip-on exhaust to increase performance. I recently read this regarding the KLX 250 in another recent thread.
Well I want to take care of my bike so I just ordered an new No Toil Pre-Oiled Foam Air Filter and new KN-112 - Oil Filter so I can do an oil change (despite the dealer telling me it just had an oil change).
I have noticed a little tick-tick coming from the engine at times but from what I've read, that's sort of normal with the KLX. I also noticed when I turn the engine off it makes a little clunk sound as soon as it shuts down. Is that normal? Recently, a couple times when I was in too high of a gear, on the trails, riding up a hill and almost stalled, I heard some clunking again. But I was in the wrong gear and I figured the sound was due to almost stalling the engine under duress. It went away as soon as I downshifted (probably not good for the engine though).
I really like my bike, it has relatively low miles and I want to keep her running strong. So other than performing basic maintenance - changing oil/air filter - is there anything else you guys can suggest to keep my bike running in tip-top shape?

In total stock form the klx is a fine bike that if taken care of will last and hold some value. Most owners mod as the bike is very restricted stock and the bang for the buck in the first few mods is great. None of this will change how dependable the bike will be most folks feel like it is a much better overall bike at stage one or two. A slip on muffler alone will change it into a different machine, then a good air filter, jetting and an airbox mod and you went from about 17 hp stock to 20 or more in some cases. My bike is as dependable as stock but much, much faster with simple stuff nearly anyone can do.
As far as the ticks go I wouldn't worry too much unless it gets worse, a common one is rpm related and occurs 4-6K and gets real loud, if it happens you need a manual cam chain tensioner, they are available here or on ebay.
The tick tick is probably the cam chain as stated. If it gets really loud, you'll need to do something about it.
The Clunk @ low rpm in my opinion is the ACR kicking in, when that happens and your going up a hill, get leaning to the hill side as the engine is quit. Use more rpm's, lower gear or slip the clutch. I like to leave the clutch alone and lug the engine, got to get rid of those habit's.
