Mine ran with the stock pilot jet before and after I uncorked it and after I went to the 351. It was fine for my bike. No starting problems Idled smooth and got good fuel mileage.

You may just need adjustments, OR have a vacuum leak.

Turn the idle up, then turn the mixture screw till it runs the best. Then adjust the idle speed to your preference, I shoot for 1250 for a 250cc and 1500 for a 351. Then adjust the mixture screw for fastest Idle speed again. Once you have a base line, try 1/4 turn in and 1/4 turn out to see how it affects the bike. Make fine adjustments to see how the bike runs each time. No one setting is good for everyone.
