would an older model fit? i found one for the klx300 for a decent price.

The older chainguards do work. I put a Fredette on my 09. The only thing you have to do is use the thick aluminum washers for the dr400 application. They go between the swingarm mounting tab welded to the bottom of the swingarm and the guard itself to space it correctly.
