No, the speedo drives are too different to work (without acces to a lathe and mill). I parted out my 1995 KDX200 (same speedo/odo drive as the KLX300R and '06-'07 KLX250S) when I bought my 2009 KLX250S. I thought about keeping the KDX wheels for a second set of tires, but decided it would be not worth the hassle, mainly because the front hub would need to be machined to work.

There are two differences between the older and newer hubs. The newer hub is smaller in diameter at the drive/hub seal. The newer hub has the drive tangs machined in a different position axially and radially.

It would be possible to machine the older hub to match the dimensions of the newer hub; in fact it appears that Kawasaki is using the same casting and just machining it differently. But the job will definitely require a lathe to reduce the diameter, and preferably a mill to remachine the tangs. The tangs could be redone with careful grinder and file work...but since a machine shop would be required anyway, milling is a much more preferable choice. Depending on the machine size and capabilities, the wheel may need to be disassembled to allow the hub to be machined...lots of hassle. In my mind, unless the wheels are dirt cheap or free (mine were) and the machine shop cost was cheap or free (mine was) it just wasn't worth the hassle. I was money ahead to sell my old wheels.

So the conclusion is the rear wheel will work, but not the front. Rear needs drilled and tapped to fit the rotor from the 09. The front should be sold off to someone with a pre 09 KLX, 650 uses the same hub.

Thanks for all the responses. I was hoping to get away with an 07 set of hubs already laced to SM rims but by the looks of it the cost associated with making it work would be as much as just buying a set designed for an 09. Guess I'll keep looking!

If you get them cheap enough you could do whatever to get the speedo drive to work. Never looked at them each, but it could be the ticket. I have the 650C and the 09 250, but I'd have to take them apart to compare and no way I can do that at this point.

Don't forget, your 17 will alter speed readings.

Supermoto use...that is a horse of a slightly different color. Considering how wildly inaccurate the speedo would become, you could just leave the drive off entirely, run a good sealed bearing, and just get a spacer of appropriate width to install in place of the drive. Use GPS for speedo if needed. Still need to figure out the brake rotor diameter issue though.

Man's got a point there...

But I'd say get the SM drive and leave the one off the 21" wheel, since it would most likely be used on back roads and off road. The SM speed would likely be most critical.

The rear hub off my KDX 220('01) is the same p/n as the hub on my '09 250S.
Did a wheel swap (to see if I'd like a trails tire on the street) with no issues.
The rotor & sprocket bolt right on. However, the outside spacers(bearing to swingarm) are different length on the 250S.
