Yes, but....

You'll need to use the pull cable only. Ditch the push cable. On the carb, the push cable bracket on top will need to be ground down for the tank to fit. It's fairly well documented. See the FAQs in my sig line.

It looks like your method is much more robust than just setting the tank on the little rear rack.

even if the frame could crack/break, which could be reinforced

you may not need extra fuel all the time, which also adds weight
so you can choose when to carry it
then the rest of the time keep it off, have a lighter bike
