Default 06/07 Owners: license plate options?

Wondering if there are any first gen owners who've ditched your stock license plate mount in exchange for something a little less bulky?

I'm ready to remove the eyesore on mine but would like to replace it with something tasteful.

I would say, 90% ditched the original. I'm running LED light/turnsignals, I mounted them to a piece of plastic which is attached to a rack. I had an aluminum plate I screwed the plate to, but after some crashes, I just got rid of that and now screw the plate to the fender, to be readd from the right.

They never give me a new plate and that one was getting ready to rip in half.

I used a Sicass Racing taillight holder from a dual sport kit and mounted the stock license plate light to it. Sorry for the crappy pics, it's dirty.

I went out to the shed today to start removing the stock plastic eyesore. That was easily removed, and I just snipped the wire, taped it up, and zip-tied it safely under the seat. I don't expect to get any grief over lack of plate light where I live. I probably won't do much riding at night anyway. But the wire is there if I need it in the future.

I was about to toss the stock piece in the "Ugly" box when I noticed that the license plate mount portion was a separate piece. So I just used that little metal piece, drilled a couple of holes and fastened it right to the fear fender under the brake light. Looks good enough for me.

And, yeah, my rear tire is about smoked. I'm planning to order a Tusk DSport 120 this week.

That is how I changed mine to originally. If you do a lot of dirt work and crashes like I do, that plate is going to get tore up. If you don't ride with protection, that edge can slice right through muscle. Just say'in.

Thanks for the heads up. That thought did cross my mind. If I do eventually get into the gnarly stuff and it becomes a risk for injury, I'll reassess. Should be fine for a while though.

On my KLX650 using the same type fender I got a piece of rubber flap, cut it to fit the plate, with a tab at the top, then drilled holes and attached it to the end of the rear fender. Still there 40,000 miles later.
