Default Mule 3010 Fuel Pump problem

I have a 2005 3010 that I bought used. The previous owner had installed an "aftermarket" electric automobile fuel pump. That fuel pump quit and I am replacing it with the correct unit. The new pump runs when connected directly to the battery, however, does not operate when connected to the 2 wires from the frame. 1 wire has 12v that is available when the key is on (and no voltage when the ignition key is off) and the other wire goes directly to ground. Any thoughts why the fuel pump doesn't work?

The fuel pump utilizes a magnetic pickup or whatever on the flywheel to excite the fuel pump so that it doesn't run when the key is left on.
