Default 1100 Zxi Battery/Magneto/Generator

My 1997 1100 Zxi runs fine except it kills batteries several times a season. It'll be running but after turning it off, the next start attempt even seconds later results in a no go just the starter selenoid clicking. I see in the service manual there are charging specs for a "generator" but there is no other mention of it. The magneto is mentioned separately several times. Are the magneto and generator the same device? What could be preventing the "generator" from recharging my battery? Thanks

When you have it running check the voltage, it should be about 14volts if the generator is working properly. If not you may need to replace the gen. The magneto should be a separate component. Also make sure your using a deep cycle marine battery, they hold amps better than a regular battery if you drain them down.

Thanks for the prompt reply. After I start the engine do I disconnect the battery leads and check the voltage across these leads or can I keep the battery attached and check the voltage on the battery posts? Do I need to rev the engine? I've been using a 20L-BS battery.

You can keep the battery attached, if the voltage looks low you can rev the engine to see if it helps. Gotta be careful tho, the amps can blow the fuse in your ammeter if you use the wrong setting.
