Default zx6d mixing oil and water...

Hey guys (and gals)... I'm relatively new to the street bike thing, but I grew up riding dirt bikes... I recently picked up a 92 zx6d for next to nothing but it is mixing water into the crankcase oil... my question is are these bikes similar to dirt bikes in water pump failures can cause this? Or am I looking at a head or head gasket issue? I am a car mechanic and I plan on doing the repair (whatever it winds up being) myself. I'm just trying to figure on where to start... thanks for your input in advance and all is appreciated

OK so I started dissasembly at the water pump. When I pulled the hoses I also noted oil in the coolant. I pulled the pump put of the side of the case, and the shaft seal had completely ejected itself from the pump housing. I cleaned it all up and noticed that the seal would slide in and out of the housing easily. Easier than would be needed to hold back 16psi that the cooling system makes. I installed a new pump. (New OEM). Flushed the cooling system with water until it ran clean, then added coolant. I flushed the crankcase with 10w30 generic car oil. Let me say I DID NOT drive the bike this way, I just let it idle for a few mins on the stand... I then changed the filter, flushed again with the same oil, and process. I changed the filter again and added roughly 3.75quarts of kawi oil. I am happy to say that. after Carb synch by a buddy the almost 20 year old bike is running like a champ... next up fixing oil leaks and new plugs and wires...

nicely done. The seals and the impellers are weak on these units from what I have read.
