i talked to the previous owner and he said he though white smoke and fowled spark plugs he experienced were due to an over rich mixture... does that change any opinion? haha... i'm just not sure what to try to fix. should i try better air filters and see what happens?

Is it possible the yay-hoo that owned the bike before you set the idle up real high to compensate for drilling out the jets? Drilling them out probably made the bike bog down a lot since the engine was being flooded with gas. setting the idle would have helped offset this problem until it idled long enough to becomeloaded up with too muchgasagain. That may explain why it will eventually return to idle only to choke out and die.
