Default tach problem

my tach revs to 3500 rpm, no matter what speed i ride at. i can go through the gears fine. just tops at 3500 rpms. Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appericated. bike is a 1987 zl 600 eliminator.

First thought is to check for vacuum leaks then clean and synchronize the carbs. Good luck

Check for a shorted out wire. I had it happen on my ZRX. Start at the tach and trace the wiring back. A wire may have been pinched or rubbed against the frame.
