I want to know how the exhaust is routed through the muffler.

Is it strait through like most exhaust pipes, or because its a crazy shape does it turn around in different places like a car muffler?

A picture would be nice if possible.

Its kinda like a stack of funnels in a tube.
If you space 'em out evenly, some of the force diverts and eventually re-gathers at the end. The force is sound waves (called harmonics) from the loud explosion occurring in the cylinders. On 2 stroke engines, the shape of the muffler determined the out pressure of the exhaust and actually regulated the compression ratio of the cylinder.
If you want a better sound, buy it. The design of a muffler is specific to the bike it's on. Aftermarket is build around that spec. Without it.....ouch....

So, no. don't knock the baffles out of the stocks, by the right aftermarket.
