Question KLX 250 won't go into 1st gear

First time bike owner so not sure if I'm doing something wrong. But when I come to a very sharp corner, I slow down to 2nd gear and when I pull in the clutch and try to go into 1st gear, sometimes I hear loud clanking noises and bike won't go into 1st gear at all. Have to really slow down the bike before it will go into first gear. Is this normal ? Thanks for any advise.

Yes, its normal. At certain speeds the bike doesn't like to mesh into 1st gear. Also when you come to a stop, just before the bike stops rolling if you are still in second gear, then the trick is to pull the clutch, put a slight down pressure on the shifter and then slowly let the clutch out about half way, the bike will pop into first and then you're set. You will get used to it. oh and welcome to the forums!!!

Deej is right, normally you wouldn't change into first unless you were stopped or almost stopped. Also if you learn to double clutch it will make it easier to downshift. This article will help. I know it says sportbikes but it applies to all bikes.
