HELP! Engine cuts out
Can anyone advise where i should start looking, history is as follows.
Bike (KLR 250) has been fantastic untill this afternoon, travelling along nicely at 60mph when bang!, something happened, the bike still ran, but the rev counter started jumping about from 2K to 10K eratically.
On the way home the Rev counter is still doing its wierd thing, also the temp guage goes back and forward then settles. Then..
Backfires, and the engines cuts out. stuck on side of road for 15 mins then it starts again, rev counter still wiered, but bike runs for 1/2 mile, then backfire and dies.
Ride like this to get home for next 4 miles, stop/start/stop/start etc... looks like i have to wait for something to cool down before it works, sounds electrical.
Any one got any ideas where to start looking first?
Regards
Rich

RE: HELP! Engine cuts out
Sounds like a electrical glitch . Cheak you battery voltage. If the battery failed or is failing there wont be enough voltage to fire the coil . Your tach pics ( REV Counter as you call it ) its siginal off the coil so this explains why it is jumping around because the coil isnt firing properly . Alowing the cylinder to load up with raw fuel and eventuly it fires causing a lare combustion or BACK FIRE .
Your stand by voltage should be very near 13 volts . Anything under 12.5 is su****ious as a problem . While running voltage should read 14.5 to 15 volts .
How old is the bike and is the original battery ?
Also did you blast any water crossings ?

Cheers C10, you say tomato i say tomato... We call them Rev counters across the big pond..
Haven't been through water (cant find anythng bigger than a puddle round here!)
bike is 9 years old with a new battery, (only had the bike 2 months)
Will check the voltage this weekend, but as the Tach and temp guage went haywire first it does lead me to think its electrical, the coil being the main culprit.
Will do some checking and advise
