changing the rear sprocket
Hi All,
I have a 82 440 LTD with a bad chain. I want to change the chain and the sprockets, but I never changed a rear sprocket before.
Any tips? I don't think I will have too much trouble taking the rear wheel off, and putting it back on ( but any tips will be appriecated!) but I never took a wheel apart before.
Thanks in advance for any sage advice!
George

welcome to kf!!
sprockets jobs are easy. just like changing out a brake disc. just remember that theres a cush drive in there, so when you remove the hub, don't lose any of the rubber bushings that are in there.. inspect them a well for wear and tear while they're out..
you can use a small impact gun to drive off the sprocket bolts.. like a butterfly impact or 3/8 drive gun.. don't want to go crazy on the torque, since the hub is cast aluminum.
theres no specific orientation on the gear itself, unless otherwise noted from the manufacturer.
hope this helps!!

Does the 440 have an endless chain? Grind off the rivets to a link, press it out and change the sprockets and chain as a unit. But as mention on the sprocket, do a quick visual on how the cush drive is doing.
Ok, doesn't sond too bad. Although, it's been quite a while since I've been inside the back wheel of a bike...Since about '86 or so with my trusty 81 kawi kdx175. I had to go look up "cush drive" on wikipedia..Now i remember. I was looking at the bike last night, and I can see that there is a little play between the sprocket motion and the wheel. More than I remember. Perhaps the cush drive is worn.
The chain that is on the bike now has a broken master link that is hanging on by a thread..not safe to use.
I have a manual, I am prettty sure it has good instructions for lining up the wheel, setting up the brake, and that tension bar.
Thanks!
