Default Cbi/cdi box, stater?

Hey fellas,

I recently purchased a 79 z1000 r1 and have been using it for commuting between cities, I was riding and all the power went out to it. No lights coming from the ignition, actually the ignition key does nothing. was wondering what the problem was. when i touch the starting nut to the power nut it turns over just fine but recieves no spark to the spark plugs

I asked around at 3 motorcycle shops and the guys say the same things Coil, Cbi/Cdi box (not sure which they said as they spoke quickly and were busy) or the Stater. I can rebuild any CAR engine but these are components specifically for motorcycles and I have no experience with them.

I was wondering how to test these components and how to discern which of these components is bad. or if it sounds like I'm in the right ball park or not.
Thanks for your time sorry if I'm not the best at looking for these things on forums and you just have to link me something

Welcome to KF.

Get yourself a manual. It gives you all of the required testing tools and how to do it. Congrats on the ride. I will hit up my manuals on this ride shortly. (not the same, but should be close enough)

Ignore stator and regulator, they're only concerned with the charging circuit and your battery has charge.

You've proved that the starter is OK.

Coils wouldn't prevent the starter turning from the key.

You're left with the CDI, the ignition switch, the relay that powers the CDI when the key is turned, the wiring - so check all the connectors, and..........

You have checked the fuses?

It's no different to a car. Stator, Rotor and regulator add up to the car alternator.

Welcome to the forums, G79. I'd probably start cheap and double-check all the connections and ground. Older bikes (which have most likely been parked outdoors at some point) will accumulate corrosion. Agree with William^, check your switches and wiring. A bad ground can behave just like a blown fuse; very similar physics. Check your "battery on" circuits, then your "running" circuits. THEN move on to the hard parts.
Keep us posted! Gear up; stay safe.

Default No Progress

I failed to mention when it broke on the side of the road I pulled every fuse I could find to see if it was a fuse.
I've attempted replacing the ignition which I thought the wiring problem could've been in and now have installed the old one again because that did nothing.
I'm not the best with testing circuits.
If any1 has a link to a PDF format manual I sure would appreciate it

so I checked everything with a Multimeter and feel like a total newb, one of the fuses looked just fine but was apparently to old or something to of done it's job right, corrected it with a new fuse. Starts right up. THANX Fellas wouldn't of checked the fuses a second time without ya.
