Carb Rebuild
Alright, I am in the beginning phases of my carb rebuild...ya know, walking around it, beer in hand, trying to figure out where to start while scratching myself in, well, we'll just leave it at that. The book does a good job of giving me pictures and whatnot, but I was wondering if there was anything I should do prior to rebuild to "prepare" myself? Also, I am doing a jet kit when I rebuild it, anything with that either? Last but not least, I am going to be buying the SS2R V&H system for my bike, and I don't know if I can do that myself, is there anything in there that requires actual shop tools, or will a well equipped garage do it for me. By the spring, I want to have the carb done (jet kit included), exhaust, tires, and air filter (3 minute job). Does everything there sound good? Any responses are apprecitated even if they are just for support for a nOOb doing this sort of stuff on a bike! Thanks!
Best advice...
Just tear into it!
All you need to do is loosen the boot clamps, take off the fuel/vacuum lines, and disconnect the throttle cable. After that, it will come right off. The first time I took out my carbs, it took about a half hour; second time around only took about ten minutes. It's much easier than you would believe. you just have to start tearing into it.
Oh yeah, GET A SERVICE MANUAL! There is nothing that will help you out more than a manual. Trust me, this is very important.
Good luck, and welcome to the forums!

Take your time. Do not mess with any other screws or jar the carb rack as in throwing it on the bench! lol Keep things clean and organized and follow directions. You will do fine.
I started going on the spare carb...it's much easier than I thought it would be. I ordered my jet kit yesterday so it should be here the beginning of next week, and once I have a full day off, I am pretty sure I can finish everything off. I am sure I can get it back on, just getting it running well may be the problem. This is my first time, so its going to be a pain I am sure, because everything is so sensitive!
Well, I am planning on doing the pipes, like before next riding season, but I can't do that at the moment so I decided to start on something that I can do from my apartment without too much trouble. I do want the practice with getting them apart and learning the parts. I know I need to do the exhaust in order for the jet kit to work to its fullest ability. I just need to get the $$$, the new promotion at work may help that!
Holy crap, I got the carb cleaned and rebuilt, jetted, floats replaced, and reinstalled on my bike...then I hit some trouble, I could not remember where each hose went! After messing around for a little bit, I got a little kick out of it but it would not start, I did one more switch and all the sudden it sputtered to life! I got it to idle relatively nicely, condsidering I didn't change any of the mix at all yet. I had previously had the problem of it not going above 5k, and then sputtering and dying. I am now able to go all the way up to 10k without any problem. The only thing that I want to be sure about are the two clear lines that are coming from either side of the carburetor...what are they for? They are not the vacuum lines that hook up to the tank at all, they are clear. Also, are there any easy ways to tune the carb? Any tips or tricks? Thanks a lot!
