bike is running like crap
Ok so I got my bike running and streetable so now i've moved on to why its running like crap. I cleaned the carbs today...lots of crap in the top of the carbs. I fould a nice hole on the air tube that connects the carbs to the airbox. i did a temp fix on it until the local hardware store opens. I also discovered when I had the carbs off that my rubber boots connecting carbs to intake manifold are shot. 3 have nice gashes on them and one is torn all the way through and all 4 clamps are nolonger round, but ovalish. So I assume thats the biggest reason the bike is running bad. cleaning the carbs helped the power alot, but you can just tell its not getting all the fuel it needs. it sounds exactly like when going down the road and you start to run out of fuel and need to switch to reserve. i've checked all fuel lines are they are good to go. Is it possible that the timing could of went out of wack from the wreck. I did a quick carb sync, but I didn't have a gauge so I just did it by eye. I'll do it with a gauge in a few days..when i get the gauge that is. Any other ideas?
I would say if the boots were cracked from the carbs to intake, that would make it run rough. I've had this happen with the boots just being loose. But I would definately replace the boots and clamps.
When syncing the carbs on a non liquid cooled engine, a fan should be used to cool the engine. I'm not sure about the water cooled engines though. I would maybe recomend that also, esspecialy if you've never done it before. The job itself doesn't take too long to do, but if you've got any vacuum leaks or other issues it may give you a hard time trying to sync them.
I did it without a fan once with a bike that had a coil with an intermittent sparking problem. It took me a few minutes longer trying to sync the carbs, the engine got so hot the oil started leaking from the oil pan bolt holes and oil fiter area.
Ever since that when the bike was hot, it ran like shi*. I parted the bike after that.
I would use a big fan!

i'm buying carb boots. I can't find a good deal on a carb sync gauge set yet. On a liquid cooled engine you don't need a fan, you've got a radiator. its just like a car, you can idle the bike all day long.
Carbs are most likely your biggest problem. once you get them all cleaned up inside and out, make sure there are no air leaks ANYWHERE! Doing a carb sync will help, but not by that much. (you should first visually sync up the throttle plates with the carbs off the bike)
