Default battery only charges to 5v

recently purchased an 81 ltd 750 which has not been run for two+ years. trying to get it running again. apparently the battery was new three years ago. when i tried to charge it it will only hold 5v (according toa battery voltage meter).

5v was enough to turn on some lights, and make the starter click.

I hooked it up to a car battery (did not turn the car on) the batteryvoltage meterread 12+ volts but would not turn the engine over.

My question is do i need a new battery?

yeah - battery life is normally only 3 years anyways. and if it only charges to 5 volts then its dead and needs replacing.

Glad to hear you quit being cheap and bought a new battery. Now get that thing running.
