83 Spectre KZ1100-D2
I have an 83 KZ1100-D2 low org. miles (about 35000), but the battery has stoppedcharging. I replaced the battery with a new one,
thinking the other was too old, but apparently that wasn't it. Can anybody tell me where I should start to look or maybe how to troubleshoot so I can find the problem? That is the only thing wrong with it right now, everything else looks and function perfectly.

I had the same problem and needed to buy a "Clymer Manual" for my bike (e-bay $20.00) and a "multimeter" which is a small device that measures volts, ohms and amps.
This also is not expensive ($20.00 to $30.00)
Makwe sure it is heavy enough to handle the amount of amps your bike generates
as you can "fry" it
The first thing you will want to find out is whether or not your battery is being charged.
You will attach the probes to the battery terminals
At idle the meter should show about 12 volts or so
As the RPMs increase the volts should increase as well until at 4000 RPM the meter is registering 14.5 to 15 volts or so
If the voltage is not increasing, is substantially higher or lower than the specs indicate then you'll need to go on and test the regulator/rectifier and/or alternator/generator
I have not gotten past this yet but the manual will direct you as to where and what to look for.
Using the multimeter is a bit tricky.
In short, you'll need to set it for the expected type and amount of energy the various units generate
and connect it to the correct wires/terminals
The "Clymer" manuals are very specific.
It sounds very confusing but if you understand how to use the "multimeter" and what it tests for and can find the various places on the bike indicated by the manual then you'll be able to diagnose the problem
Remember -- it may just be a faulty wire.
The multimeter can be used to test a wire as well
Place one probe in one end and the other in the other
If the wire is good it makes a "beeping" sound
If it doesn't "beep" then the wire is no good
I don't know squat about this stuff and if I can speak somewhat intelligently on this then anyone can

I would betthe ststor is bad. Un plug the 3 yellow wires from the stator to reg/rec,or at stator lead under the countershaft cover. you will need to use multi meter on acv between any leads and should see about 20vac at idle and 75vac at 4000 rpm. stators go bad on this model from running oil level and not cooling the stator since it runs in oil.Hope this helps. Don't buy used. Probably bad part. New or rewind.
